The scissors represent the resourceful women of the 2nd World War era in New Zealand. An era where such handi-crafts as quilt-making, knitting and sewing were common place.
Die Schere symbolisiert die ideenreichen Frauen des 2. Weltkriegs in Neuseeland, eine Ära, in der Kunsthandwerk wie Steppdecken, Stricken und Nähen gang und gäbe waren.

‘Tama Ngakau Marie’ – is a Maori hymn – it was sung by the Maori soldiers as they buried their fellow soldiers overseas during the 2nd World War.
“Tama Ngakau Marie”- ist ein Volkslied der Maori und wurde während des 2. Weltkrieges von den Maorischen Soldaten gesungen, als sie ihre Kameraden beerdigt haben.

Textured Areas
These sections of texture are used to create breathing spaces within the composition – to create balance amongst the busier sections of imagery and text. The lines of texture remind me of disturbed landscapes. A reminder of what we leave behind after warfare. The vertical lines are also used for overall visual analogy.
Diese strukturierten Oberflächen sind wie Atempausen in dem Gemälde. Dies wirkt gegen die „lauteren“ Teile. Die großen Kratzer in der Oberfläche erinnern mich an Landschaften,eine Erinnerung an die Kriegsfolgen. Die Vertikalen auch für bildnerische Analogien benutzt.

The hibiscus - brings femininity to the work – and is another reminder of the women ‘holding the fort’ back home while they wait for their men to return.
Der Hibiskus bringt Weiblichkeit in das Werk- als Erinnerung an die Frauen, die zuhause die Stellung halten, während sie auf ihre Männer warten.

Feathers - represent the Maori feather cloak. (Kahu huruhuru)
Of all the traditional garments of the Maori, it is the feather cloak which is the most highly prized as a family and personal heirloom.
Federn symbolisieren den maorischen Feder-Umhang. Von allen traditionellen Kleidern der Maoris ist der Feder-Umhang das am höchsten geschätzte Familienerbstück.

The number ‘28’ – represents the ‘28th Maori Battalion.’

AOTEAROA – is the Maori word for New Zealand.’ It means ‘Land of the Long White Cloud.’

Tenei Tou Matou – is Maori for: ‘We are here always.'
When my beloved grandmother (Pat King) died, it didn't take long for her to remind me that she 'is always there' - as I witnessed rainbow after rainbow appearing shortly after her death.  Everytime I see a rainbow now, my eyes well up with tears and I feel her love again.  She always shows up just when I need her.

                                                                                  

'Tenei Tou Matou' represents words of comfort from the lost soldiers and women of the 2WW. Whispering to their loved ones who remain, that they too are there always.

KIA KAHA– are Maori words of encouragement, meaning: 'Stay Strong.'

These words represent the courage and tenacity of the men and women of the 2WW era.

KIA - is also an acronym which stands for: 'Killed In Action.' This acronym is used in history books beside the names and military numbers of fallen soldiers.
